JAZZ MEETING

RECORDED LIVE IN BANDUNG ON NOVEMBER 18 & 19, 1977.

This live recording was made in two successive evenings during a students concert in Bandung. It was one of those rare occasions when everything went just right, musically. It was a real spontaneous musical meeting between two generations of Indonesian jazz musicians. Bubi Chen and Maryono as the first generation group, Perry, Karim and Elfa representing the younger group. They only met a few hours before the session, made brief preparations which can't be called as a rehearsal, only a meeting of mind.

With plenty of technical and acoustical problems to overcome, the concert was surprisingly a musical success, owing to the spirit of the musicians and the responsive audience. Maryono was in full mastery of his instrument, with Bubi comping and chording behind him and soloing fluently on the electric piano. Elfa hitting notes like never before and the rhythm section of Karim and Perry was just flowing and driving the group steadily, whatever it was rock, bossa, straight swinging 4/4 or a sensitive ballad. The addition of the soaring husky voice of Margie contributed had to the completeness of the session. It was a musical happening rarely happened these days.

For those who were at the concert, this recording is a must for the musical memory. For those who were not there, should listen to this beautiful spontaneous music making. With all the technical shortcomings of this live recording, hearing this album, you will enjoy a great experience in jazz. As we did and as we hope, you will.
